    Can you separate two chinchilla

I've separated litter mates who have been together for some time before. Most of my show chins are weaned with their littermates, separated for show prep, and if not sold individually or put into breeding, repaired after they are shown. It's no big deal, just be sure to give them more of your...

Animals for sale - will be at NY/NE show

Think I'm going to keep X5 back for my own use. All other animals are $100 for the remainder of June. Need to make room for new breeding stock!

Introducing a puppy to a chinchilla

Slow and careful. I'd keep puppy on a leash and reward good behavior - calm sniffing, or focusing her attention elsewhere after sniffing the chin's cage, etc. Chinnie can get away from the dog this way and you're teaching the dog appropriate behavior around the cage. My dogs don't even notice...

Animals for sale - will be at NY/NE show

We are motivated to sell! Need to free up cage space for the new animals we have coming in this fall. No reasonable offer will be refused!

Chinchilla care while I am pregnant

I took care of my breeding herd while pregnant with no ill effects. You should be fine, just use caution (which you already seem to do).

    Being lonely is ok?

I agree, a four-hole cage is best. You can buy PVC travel water bottles and I would probably just throw some hay cubes in for them for the trip. They should do fine.

Strangest Purchase you made for chins

Every ash tray I come across becomes a food dish. They're so easy to clean! I have piles of them and I've never smoked in my life. I have also been known to buy flower pots for hay holders - I have a black thumb so they're not for flowers! But they work really well for hay.

    Breeders/ranchers posting on the forum

I think that's not quite accurate. A lot of the things ranchers/breeders do are not either acceptable in the eyes of or should not be attempted by pet owners. For example, some pet owners will get completely ruffled at the thought of chinchillas not getting out for play time or not having a...

    Dwarfism, and Ethics in breeding

I breed with pelt quality in mind, although I do not pelt. I do not care for the Locken or Angora mutations, and while cute, I would not breed for a dwarf chinchilla, healthy or not. I do not breed to appeal to the pet market, although most of my chins do end up as pets. As Dawn said - it...

New to Chins need help with colors.

Well it's great that they have pedigrees - and if the belly is white it's definitely a standard, although I'm surprised the pedigrees don't note their colors. I recommend you contact the breeder(s) and find out more about their lines, and do research/attend shows, and perhaps learn from the...

    Cold

In old chinchilla rancher guides I've read, the temperature was maintained somewhere around 40 degrees. So I don't think a chinchilla in your home is going to get too cold. I keep mine around 62.

New to Chins need help with colors.

CCChins - you said you rescued these boys... Did they come with pedigrees? If not, please don't breed them. If you want to breed, Ryersons are a great ranch to buy from, see about getting males and females both. If the boys came with pedigrees and are from good breeders, then contact the...

    Ramps?

Chinchillas get around just fine by jumping, and having to do so helps them stay healthy and happy. I have a 15 year old chin who gets around in his cage just fine with no ramps, and it's not worth the risk of injury to have them in there. Unless they're solid wood and therefore another possible...

    Do chins need light?

I know some breeders keep their chins in their basements. Most have lights set on a timer system, although the duration and specifics I'm not certain about and are likely intended to increase production.

Animals for sale - will be at NY/NE show

If the three young standard males are purchased together, I'll let them go for $275! I'd really like to see them stay as a group. I have cages available too and would sell one at a low price to see them remain as a trio!

Difference between Violet and Blue Diamond Chinchillas?

The color difference is astounding - I've been able to see it on my computer if a photo is well lit. Side by side there is no mistaking one for the other.

    Stain and odor remover

I've always washed out with the vinegar, wiped it with a clean, dry cloth and popped the chinchilla back in with no problem. I've never used hydrogen peroxide in my chinchilla cages, as I always use vinegar. I just use that in my house.

    Stain and odor remover

Hydrogen peroxide is my second favorite cleaner mix, after vinegar!

    Why are chins considered exotic?

Be sure to let me know who that was, Becky, so we know to avoid referring anyone to him!

    Stain and odor remover

I've always used apple cider vinegar when cleaning inside of a chinchilla cage. Vinegar is like my favorite cleaner ever.
