Chins do not overeat - true or false?

Of course a chinchilla can be overweight, all you need is a bad diet and a tiny cage. That said, I've never seen one that i thought was dangerously overweight. I have noticed some of my older females get a little dewlap of sorts, but that's about it.

    Huge surprise!

How exciting and scary to discover kits when you didn't even know you had a female. I had a very similar experience with my first chinchilla. I had only had her about a week when i noticed something moving in her little wooden house. I thought it was a mouse and prepared to kill it. When I...

    A Hard Decision...

I was very fortunate to have a few teachers who i loaned animals to for their classrooms for the years in college when i couldn't care for them. I am not sure whether or not that is an option for you, but it worked splendidly for me.

    What makes a good/reputable breeder

A good reputable breeder is someone that strives to produce the best animals they can. They are honest and willing to help others learn to do the same. Sure as a ranch or even smaller hobby breeding situation you have to be business minded and attempt to at least break even( good luck!) But...

I used to have a lot of time on my hands and I would weigh my chinchillas every few days. most people don't do this because it's crazy. lol I would however recommend weighing them once a month if you have small enough numbers to feasibly do so. That way when your females start to gain, you can...

    Is plastic really "THE EVIL"?

i personally have never had a problem with plastic in my cages. I honestly think most people make a bigger deal out of the whole plastic in the cage issue. That having been said, none of my cages now have plastic items in them simply because they seem to like the wooden and cardboard boxes/...

    Charcoal or not?

Jeff exactly what process are you using to isolate the charcoal gene? Have you had any luck. How do you tell the different varieties? I am not extremely familiar with the whole ebony/charcoal genome. In fact I just recently began attempting to breed dark ebonies and luckily have been able to...

When the previous owners want their chinchilla back

I'm a little up in the air on this one. I can most definitely see why you wouldn't want to adopt the animal to the owner that surrendered it. The fact that they had to surrender it in the first place completely warrants that decision. However if they really want a chinchilla they will probably...

    Are YOU buying?

I am definitely still buying whenever I find an animal that looks like it will fit well into my small breeding program. I will say that I haven't been selling nearly as much in the last year or so. I am pretty sure this is due to the economy. In any case slowly but surely my program is moving...
