    Specialty woods

I always use poplar instead of pine because it has a nice smooth grain. By me, they are about the same price. For woodworking/carpentry, poplar is the best option if you are painting.

    Green wood?

Poplar definitely can have a green tint to it and it is not treated. I use it often for woodworking. Not a problem.

RoseHips and RosePetals suppliment or treat?

I just give Idgie some crushed rose hips a few times a week as a treat. They are healthy for her and she thinks that they are a treat, so I'm happy.

    A hay comparison (Please Read)

Could you get hay from a farmer or horse stable? Think that there would be something close to you. I get a bale from a farmer near me for $10. Nice and fresh and Idgie loves it.

Single chinchilla question (help ease my mind?)

I have had two chins over the years, both as singles. My first lived 13 years and I have had Idgie for 7 years now. Neither seemed to mind being alone. I felt bad at one point and got a stuffed "buddy" for Idgie. She sits on it at times when eating, but has never cuddled or played with it...

    Advice on warmer state

I live in Chicago and it is too hot here (and humid) to not have air conditioning. We do have our neighbors call if the power is out for awhile. There is also a device that you can buy to leave in your home that will send you a phone message alert if the temp in the house gets too high.

Question about safe woods and metals

I recommend poplar because it is easy to find and less knotholes than pine.
  8. Idgie

    safe wood?

They also sell poplar and that can be used. And it doesn't have the knotholes that pine tends to have.

What do you guys think of Mazuri pellets?

I adopted my chin and she was on Mazuri. Have kept her on it for past 7 years and no problems.

    Ideal temperature?

My chin seems happiest around 60-70. In the summer, I never let it get above 75, but that's with air and a dehumidifier (we use it for our basement). The air conditioning takes most of the humidity out, but I'm near Chicago. We don't have our house under 60, so not sure about that.

    is your food dish covered??

I use a tiny ceramic bowl that I just put on the floor. Idgie doesn't tip it over nor does she poop in it.

    bedding

When I adopted my chin, she was using Carefresh, so I continued with that. She doesn't eat it, but some chins do. It is also pricey, though I buy an off-brand that is a little cheaper. I like it because of the lack of scent. I can't deal with the smell of aspen since Idgie lives in the main...

    How cold is too cold?

Could the person who was checking on him take him to their house?

    Question About Timothy Hay

I never even heard of hay with mint or carrot. Is that flavored? I wouldn't think that it would make a difference, but I would give just plain hay.

    Hay Holder

I tried the wire ones, but the chins just pulled all the hay out all over the floor anyway (they always search for the best pieces lol). So I just put the hay in a pile in the corner and that seems to work just fine. It mostly stays there.

    Leaving our baby alone :(

Do you have someone who could come by and at least check on him? Personally, I wouldn't leave my chin alone, so I'm not sure what would be the best way to do that.

    Alfalfa hay

I get a bale of grass hay from a farmer and it has some alfalfa mixed in. Idgie will always go for the alfalfa first.

    Awake Chinchilla

Idgie gets up during the day sometimes to eat a little or just sit. She also sleeps a bit over night.

What does "cleaning the cage" actually mean.

I only have Idgie in a one level cage with a solid bottom. Once a week I empty the whole cage out, remove all the bedding, and wipe it down with water and vinegar. I find a solid bottom so much easier to clean than an open bottom that fell into the tray below. It was so hard to clean the...
