Not chewing - and other newbie questions/concerns

Was it an exotic specialist? This seems more of what you'd recommend for a rabbit/guinea pig. From my knowledge you'd want to avoid fresh veggies with chinchillas at all cost, but I'll defer to more experienced members in this forum.

Not chewing - and other newbie questions/concerns

From experience - some chins are very picky others not at all. My Kumo used to chew on anything and was not picky about toys/food/treats. Everything interested him and he would give anything a try. Susu, on the other hand, is an extra picky chin. She stopped eating the Oxbow-brand hay (to be...

How to help a chinchilla in mourning?

As I posted recently, my boy Kumo passed away this week. Susu and him have been cagemates since their days at the rescue almost 10 years ago. Susu is hard to read because she's always been a pretty passive and somewhat lazy chin (she's always been the type that would rather watch TV or watch...

    Kumo the chinchilla. Good-bye, buddy.

Kumo passed away December 1st, in my arms. I knew that morning he was too weak to continue fighting. I take some solace that even in his disease, he was well enough for 3 weeks of his last month to play and be mostly himself, but I wish there had been more I could do. I wish I had caught...

Oxbow critical care - Apple Banana?

So I couldn't find it anywhere (not even my vet has any anymore) and ended up calling Oxbow. The representative told me they had issues in manufacturing and only started producing Apple-Banana this month. They're prioritizing vet hospitals and clinics first and then they'll start re-stocking...

Oxbow critical care - Apple Banana?

Hello everybody! I was wondering if anybody knew why it's impossible to find Oxbow's Apple Banana-flavored critical care? I'm lucky that Kumo will eat Anise flavored (although not as eagerly) but he likes the Apple-Banana so much and he's been bouncing back so well from how weak and lethargic...

    Surgery?

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Thank you for sharing your experience. It really helps me to confirm some of the hesitation I've had regarding the surgery....there are no guarantees. I'll talk to the vet about all the possible options, but if he's at home I can at least make his life...

    Surgery?

Last week I noticed he was unusually lethargic so I paid a ton of attention and noticed he wasn't eating or pooping nearly as much. He did like playing but ran out of energy quickly. I took him to the vet the next morning and she gave me some medication and critical care to see if that helped...

    Surgery?

Hello everyone, I am at a painful crossroads and could use some advice from experienced owners. My almost 12 yo Kumo had an ultrasound yesterday because he'd not been feeling like himself. The vet found a lesion in his liver that they suspect could be one of 3 things: a hematoma, a liver...

    Chin behaviour changes with age?

He's sulking and doubts my every move now, but if this gets him better we'll have the time to build the trust back up. Already he's being a bit more feisty so I'm taking that as a good sign.

    Chin behaviour changes with age?

Update on Kumo: I realized that his poops were abnormally small so I called the vet and set up an immediate appointment, because this no longer seemed just a "naps too much" situation. They ran X-rays and bloodwork on him and ruled out more serious stuff, but still sent me home with medicines...

    Chin behaviour changes with age?

Oh wow, I wasn't even thinking of arthritis. He's done well in his checkups all the way to early this year, but that's a great suggestion. I'll reach out to his vet, thank you!

    Chin behaviour changes with age?

Hello everybody! I wanted to ask those who have experience with more senior chins. My Kumo is at least ~12 yo (I've had him for almost 10 years, rescue thought he was about 2). Over the last 2 years I've noticed he naps a lot more through the day, in particular over the last couple of months...

    Are my Chinchillas sad?

If it makes you feel better, my Susu still sometimes pushes my hand away...and then other times will follow my movements around the house because she wants attention. Don't take it personally. You just got a sassy chinchilla. They're fun.

    She won't eat hay

My boy was never a huge hay eater, which was always concerning to me. I always bought Oxbow, but last year I started to get disappointed on the quality. It seems like I was getting more waste than the parts my chins liked to eat. I decided to switch it up to Farmer Dave's. Best decision I have...

    Chin making loud sound

Kumo stopped making the noise just as suddenly as he started making it. So I am still clueless about what it meant but he seems healthy and happy, and I'm certainly happy to not be scared half to death at 4 a.m. anymore

    How to regain trust

I'd give her a couple of weeks to settle down before even trying to take her out to play. Sit by her cage, talk to her so she can get used to you and your voice, offer some treats and go little by little. Respect her limits while she gets to know you're a safe person. Chinchillas are naturally...

    Dental checks and anesthesia

Just a quick update: The vet think Kumo looks really healthy and everything looks good, so she just wants me to keep a lookout for any change in behaviour, the appearance of the tooth, or any sensitivity around the mouth/jaw areas. Since the other teeth look really good and he has a history of...
