Baby puffs as treats for Chinchilla?

Those also have apple puree and sugar. I wouldn't consider them safe.

How to give chinchillas eye drops?

Hello! I come here once again looking for advice. A couple of days ago, I noticed that Susu's left eye seemed a little squinty and irritated. She was definitely a bit teary-eyed and the eye was definitely bothering her. The very next morning I called her vet. However, they're fully booked for...

    CBD candle around chin?

I'd be careful with anything infused with oils around chinchillas. I even avoid diffusers...their little lungs are much more sensitive than ours and from what I have read it's just not a risk I'm willing to take.

    End of Life Care

I'm so sorry for your loss.

How does your single chin deal when you need to leave the house?

Hello everybody, As we see a glimmer of normalization in the horizon, I have come to realize I will soon have to leave the house much more often than I have in the past year. I thankfully have the opportunity to continue working mostly remote, but I will need to go to work for full days about...

Chins and Day Light's Saving Time

Mine has definitely been a bit annoyed that I am doing things at a different time and it's confusing her schedule (my chin has a very predictable schedule, it's really funny how punctual she is most days). Normally I wake up, interact with her for a bit, then she eats and goes to sleep. Now...

    Bag balm for cracked feet?

Thanks a lot! I've been applying it for the past 3 days and the foot already looks a ton better. Unless you're looking closely, you wouldn't know which was the one that bled this past Thursday. Thankfully there's been no more bleeding and she's been just as active as she usually is. She's not...

    Bag balm for cracked feet?

Hello! So my chinchilla health chronicles continue... Last night I was about to clean the cage. I had allowed Susu to take her bath right before that so I could take the dust bath away when I started cleaning. Well....I came back to blood splatter in the bath sand and my heart dropped. I tried...

Do chinchillas inow what they are capable of?

Mine may not know she can jump 6 feet, but she definitely has an idea of how high she can jump. Even as a young chin, she used to sometimes stand on my shoulder and stretch to look over the playpen fence. She wasn't being cute. She was definitely measuring if she thought she could make the jump.

Forage feeding? How to increase activity?

Hello! Thanks so much for the advice and suggestions. I got her a Chin Spin and cholla wood that is on the way and I'm looking into a few more things to enrich her environment. So far, the only thing I've actually cut are the treats. I agree with both of you that long-term limiting of food...

    Veterinary costs reality check

Everything on that list seems to be extremely on the high end. I go to an exotics only vet and X-rays are ~ $200 (including the ~$50 sedation costs). The one time I was concerned about teeth problems, the vet told me that if they needed to file down teeth it would be around $200-$250. The only...

Forage feeding? How to increase activity?

Those are great ideas, thank you! She had 2 smaller bowls so I already started dividing some of her pellets into those to see if she'll find them (she ran into one of the bowls while exploring and started to eat, so this might work!) I agree, I was getting mixed feelings about limiting pellets...

Forage feeding? How to increase activity?

Hello everyone! Susu had a vet appointment yesterday. The good news is that all tests came out pretty good and there's no immediate health concerns. However, the vet is concerned about her weight. In her words, Susu is obese. I know it's rare for chinchillas to overeat, but the vet was...

What is an easy diy way to block off play area

Hello! This really depends on how much space you have. My girl has a permanent play area that takes up a good portion of my living room (because that's where the TV is and my chin really likes the TV). What I did was buy 4 of these floor protectors to protect the carpet (my girl is known to...

    Bottle vs bowl

I use a glass bottle, no issues. I wouldn't recommend a bowl for most chins because of the potential for water spills and the chin getting wet. From how well my chin moves her food bowl (which you'd think would be too heavy for her to move, but you'd be wrong) I can only imagine the mess a...

    Chin personality change?

Hello everyone! So Susu has finally bounced back after losing her life-long buddy. She's curious about toys and usually pretty eager to take treats. She's even started seeking me out for playtime sometimes. All of this has made me very happy. However, along with all of this came a huge change...

What is normal weight fluctuation in a chinchillla?

Update on this: since my vet isn't currently seeing "normal" visits and only emergencies/injuries/sick animals at the moment, I have continued to track her weight carefully. It seems that I was just unlucky and kept catching her on low dates. While she may have lost a bit of weight, it seems...

What is normal weight fluctuation in a chinchillla?

I do try to weigh roughly around the same time every night The vet did say she was a bit overweight and wanted her to lose some weight in her last wellness visit, so that could be part of it. Agreed that the part that made me a bit nervous was the consistent loss, despite her behavior picking...

What is normal weight fluctuation in a chinchillla?

Disclaimer: I know I am likely overthinking/overinterpreting things since I just lost my other chin, but just want to make sure. Hello again! I've been weighing Susu every couple of days this past month just to monitor how she's doing with the loss of her buddy. She's a big girl (has been...

Tips for introducing a chinny buddy?

Hello everyone. As I posted recently, my Kumo passed 2 weeks ago now. One of my biggest concerns in all of this was Susu, my other chin, as they had been together basically her entire life. Even though Susu always seemed to be more of an independent little chin, she and Kumo often cuddled and...
