    Padding

A fleece pad/blanket with two layers of Poly-Fil quilt batting inside (chins can't get to it, it's not a pillowcase style. Just a squishy pad covering the metal cage floor since one of them is getting foot surgery soon) is currently being sewn as we speak. However, is it safe to wash in the...

    Should I Be Concerned?

Good, good. My boys don't show any of those signs. They still happily chew on sticks and eat hay too, which is a good sign. If they were half-eating most or half of the pellets I would be more concerned, but it's only a few out of who knows how many.

    Should I Be Concerned?

To be exact, the vet only said that is was a possibility that they were overweight since I only know that their past owners fed them a quality pellet. That was probably the only quality thing they fed them. I'm not sure how much junk they might have eaten. They could have easily fed them too...

    Should I Be Concerned?

Please tell me how I'm misinformed exactly, I'd like to know in case I'm really in the wrong here. At least one of my chins were overweight if not both of them and it's very possible that they were fed junk like you said from their past owners. Now that they're on a proper diet with me they're...

    Should I Be Concerned?

Chinchillas can definitely be overweight, that has been confirmed by my vet and other people on this forum. I never limit their hay and water, only their pellets and I've never had any issues with measured feeding. Some people free feed, and that's fine, but I've seen others measure and even...

    Should I Be Concerned?

Well, I already am concerned, but should I be even more concerned with this? Last night I noticed that there were a few half-eaten food pellets next to my chins' two food bowls. This normally never happens. There were also a few crumbs in the bowl, which isn't too unusual so that didn't worry me...

    Cushion

Double layered fleece isn't squishy enough, unfortunately. Luckily it's not major bumblefoot, it's only a small abscess. He got it from past owners. The surgery should go smoothly and he'll probably go home on the same day.

    Cushion

I actually never thought about that, so thank you! Would removing all three ledges leading up to the second level and replacing them with a cushy fleece-covered half shelf be better? Would he be able to jump from the half shelf to the second level, or would I need a ramp? The second level...

    Cushion

Unfortunately making it thick enough on fleece alone would take a LOT of fleece, especially since everything has to be covered. They aren't fleece chewers, so my only good option is to use Sherpa and/or Poly-Fil quilt batting. I'd make sure it's properly sewed so they can't get to it at all...

    Cushion

One of my boys has been diagnosed with minor bumblefoot, and the abscess needs to be removed surgically. To ensure a smooth recovery, most if not all surfaces need to be covered so he has constant softness. However, only one layer of anti-pill fleece is not enough. Does anyone have any...

    Feeling Stuck

Double CN is their old cage, double FN is their new cage that's staying home. I'm bringing the CN to the vet and leaving it there for future boarding. I was planning on having them in the double CN during the boarding, but then I thought that it might be easier if they had a single level with a...

    Feeling Stuck

Yeah, but the cage is basically the same size as their current one unless you think they'd be okay with a single level? It'd be easier for me and the vet but if that's too small I won't do it.

    Feeling Stuck

Alright. The chins will be fine with once a week fleece changes since they have ledges, right? Just double checking.

    Feeling Stuck

They will have multiple ledges. The cage is a double CN. I would downgrade just for the boarding to a single level with a shelf but that seems too small for two chins. Bedding seems like a good idea, but would that prevent them from eating the plastic pans? I'm not too worried about the mess...

    Feeling Stuck

My chins are getting boarded at a trusted boarding-vet facility, I already checked it out and stuff. They will be staying there for two weeks, but I have some concerns, mainly about cleanliness. 1. I'll be bringing their old cage, but their old cage has plastic. I don't want to use my current...

    Dust Baths

The wheel in their cage has been gone for a while now, and I'm pretty sure the scratch on his foot (yes it's the same chin, poor guy) is healed. Should I keep the wheel out until the heel is better or put it back in?

    Dust Baths

My two chins get a dust bath twice a week. However, one of them is currently in the early healing process of a cracked and previously bleeding heel. I gave him a dust bath yesterday and applied Bag Balm on the heel about 5 minutes afterwards, but today I saw a small amount of blood where he...

    Chins Both Losing Weight

The vet was questioning their weight loss, so we took them off the meds to see if that helped. I'm sure she'll give me advice next week. Would you say it's a good sign that one of them isn't losing weight as much as he used to the past months? Again, he's the 692 gram chin. Maybe his brother...

    Chins Both Losing Weight

Ever since I got my chins, they've been losing weight. Due to the timing of their vet visits, I noticed that they lost a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 55 grams per month. When I first had them they weighed somewhere in the 700 gram range, probably above 720 but under 780. That was in the...
