Scared to death of heat stoke

If you cannot keep it below 74 degrees then I would not allow playtime until then. While chins might be fine in a warmer climate such as 74 if they are allowed to play then they heat up fast and heat stroke is very possible. When it is hot and humid in my opinion chinchillas should not be...

    Chins and Cats

This question has been asked a zillion times--the answer is simple if you are a responsible owner then you should be able to keep anything from happening but this is never a 100 percent guarantee so you need to be prepared to suffer any consequence that might occur. People do have other pets...

what do you do if there's a power outage?

Is there someplace safe you can evacuate to? Someplace your chinchilla is also welcome? If not you'll need to make sure it does not get too hot for your chinchilla, not sure about the temps in MA right now. As with any case of the power going out you need to make sure you have the essentials...

what snacks do you feed your chin

The concentrated sugar in dried fruits is not good for chinchillas--they really should have no fruit so that means no fruits of any kind--fresh or dried. The best treats for chinchillas are dried whole or crushed rose hips, 1/2 of a small plain shredded wheat, 1 plain cheerio, small pinch of...

    Chins and Earthquakes?

My cat and my chinchillas were very disturbed by the earthquake and I live in Wisconsin. I was in my room reading and at 10:30am my cat started "crying" and scratching at the bed. He was very unsettled and I couldn't figure out why. A little while after that most of my chinchillas woke up and...

    Mental Maturity and Wheels?

I totally think you were right to take it out Brittany. I know Latte is a fattie but 6 months is still so young. I've noticed with my crew not everyone does the wheel the same--Bobo and GiGi run on theirs full speed ahead but have it mastered--they have a chin spin. Bronwyn and baby Lisa do...

    Random freak outs

When they hop and jump around their cage we refer to it as popcorning. I have a couple of boys who do this regular. Two of them have cuddle cubes they actually hold in their mouth and then hop and bound all over the cage while holding the cube--it's pretty silly looking and quite funny.

    worried about blood in urine!!

A chinchilla running on a wheel 24/7 is a chinchilla with issues. It is not good for a chinchilla to constantly be running on his wheel so I hope you were just throwing that out there and it's not really the case. Chinchilla urine can be a very dark red/orange. The best thing you can do is...

    Poptart Stormrider 3/26/2007-8/22/2011

Julie there are no words I can give to make the ache in your heart go away. I am sorry, so sorry, you have had to say goodbye to your beloved hedgies. I know how much you loved Poptart--loved all of them. I hope it helps a tiny bit knowing they are all together again. Hugs to you, my friend.

Either very brave, very stupid, or blind

Chinchillas are prey animals and waving your hand in front of their eyes could frighten them so please don't do this again. Sometimes a sudden movement startles them and if you want to bond with them you'll not want to startle or frighten them.

    2 questions in one. lol

Some chins are naturally slight and still healthy. I have a girl here who has always been small and you can feel her bones--but she weighs over 500grams, she is just tiny. Chins who are younger than 1 year should not have a wheel as they are still growing and need all their calories to do so...

new chin not getting along W/ others plus behavior changes in the old ones

Chins don't always get along--not all chins will and can bond with one another. This situation sounds as if it's best to leave the bonded chinchillas together and keep the new one separate--if the older chins are fighting with each other now you may have to keep all three of these ladies separated.
