An "expert" told me wheels are bad, and exercise?

Unfortunately people still breed chinchillas on a large scale for fur (as well as lab use and pet trade), even if it's true that all the ones in the US have died the US isn't the only place in the world that bred, or still do breed, them specifically for fur. I've noticed it's hard for people...

New chinchilla to love and spoil

I got Pikachu moved over to the ferret nation cage this evening. I'll add more perches later when they are processed, along with a few other things. So far he seemed excited to explore the new cage, he just doesn't understand the wheel but hopefully he'll figure it out. Also I didn't put his...

    Syringe Feeding Help

Since you have been giving meds I'm guessing you already know about burrito wrapping, but if not this might help https://www.cuddlebugchinchillas.com/information/health/burrito.html Aside from that sometimes dipping the syringe in something tasty like apple juice or a raisin can help get them...

An "expert" told me wheels are bad, and exercise?

Could be a troll, but could also be a misinformed person, or more likely a breeder/fur farmer if they say they are an "expert". There is a little bit of truth in that most wheels sold "for chinchillas" in pet stores are bad since they are not chin safe. However the reason they aren't safe...

    My Sweet Willow

Sorry for your loss. :( Dental disease in chins is so unfair.

New chinchilla to love and spoil

If you look closely at the cage floor it's covered in holes (the idea is pee and poop will fall through) which are prefect size to fit a little chin foot. I have seen many cases of people's chins getting a foot caught and in some cases injured in cages with floors like that, or the chin decides...

New chinchilla to love and spoil

He is a cutie ☺️ I think he is more confused by being in a quiet house, lol. The person I got him from had a couple young kids, so I'm sure he is use to a much more active household. The reason she said she was rehoming him was because they moved to a new house and don't have the time and space...

New chinchilla to love and spoil

A short video of Pikachu having a little playtime. He is still skittish, so he was only out for a few minutes before retreating back to his cage to hide.

    Dental Disease

It's kind of a tough one, and really it's best to look at quality of life. If you are able to keep her fairly pain free (even if you have to give pain meds) and she is able to act like a normal chinchilla (able to eat, chew on things, and still playing, etc) you likely have some more time...

New chinchilla to love and spoil

Me too, I was so surprised to see a listing for a chin close by, I actually had to look at the post a couple times to see if I was seeing it right. 😂 I was able to meet up with the person selling him when they were on their way through town, so it was only about a 20 minute drive each way. I...

New chinchilla to love and spoil

I was scrolling through kijiji yesterday afternoon and was surprised to see a chin for sale not far from me. I wasn't really expecting to find another chin anytime soon, they are not common around here so even though the old cage isn't ready for a chin yet I jumped at the chance. After a few...

    Clever behaviors

I actually have had chins throw poop, I actually saw the poop in their paw and they flung it out of the cage, in a similar way to how they throw a piece of hay or pellet they don't want off to the side. They can't throw things forward very well but they can throw something backwards and to the...

    Avoiding monkey business

I don't think it would be a good opportunity to see if he wants a friend for a few reasons. First, yes they can hang on the cage and still mate through the bars, definitely an "if there is a will there is a way" situation, lol. However having to climb to get to her will likely slow him down...

    Breeds?

First, long and short-tailed chins are not different breeds, they are different species (short-tails are Chinchilla chinchilla and long-tails are Chinchilla lanigera). The closest thing to different "breeds" of chinchillas would be ones like the Angora (long haired) and Locklen (curly coat)...

    Science Selective Chinchilla

Neither of those foods are "high-quality" foods for chinchillas, even if you are able to find them for cheaper they can lead to medical issues which would cost a lot more then just continuing to feed a good quality food. Although the Oxbow Chinchilla Essentials food is a high-quality food (and...

    Chin losing weight/not eating

You can try different flavors of critical care, it comes in Anise, Apple Banana, and Papaya. You can also try mixing in a small amount of treats with it to see if that helps. I know some people will dip the tip of the syringe in apple juice, a cut open raisin, or something similar, just enough...

    Chin losing weight/not eating

I'm going to start with, I am not a vet, I am just taking guesses based on owner knowledge and research, but I agree the chest/lungs do look "off". There does look to be improvement from the 5-4-24 to 5-17-24 photos, however it still look pretty cloudy to me. It could be the meds are working...

    Chin safe pet removal?

I would start by doing a cleaning of the room, spiders generally come in because there is food, meaning you likely have other bugs in the room/house as well. If possible also try to figure out where they are coming in, like is there a crack in the wall, window that doesn't close right, etc...

2 Chinchilla Kits, 12 days old

Well from what I've read they should gain at least a couple grams a day once the mother's milk comes in. So even if they are smaller then their sibling so long as they are gaining they may be ok. This site might help with some info too...
