Severe eye swelling - any advice

I did not resolve it. The eye burst, I had the eye removed, and she later passed away. Malo does not have a good prognosis, no matter what is done. I'm sorry. If the eye did burst from malo, that means her teeth grew through the eye socket and ruptured the eye. Now that the eye is gone...

    New member

Depends on whether you like soft and fuzzy that you may or may not be able to hold or whether you like pointy and sharp that you may or may not be able to hold. :) Welcome! There's lots to learn about either of them!

    Antibiotics

What are you giving her antibiotics for? A good all-around antibiotic is Trimethoprim sulfa. The most worrisome problem that might happen is they may drink less, though I've never had this happen to me before.

Severe eye swelling - any advice

You need to get her teeth checked with x-rays ASAP. I've had this happen before and it's because a molar is pressing into the eye socket. My vet also thought that it was an ulcer, but it turned out to be severe malocclusion.

    Chinchilla urine stains on belly?

Hard to tell why it's happening, but you can use unscented baby wipes to clean her up. Hopefully, your vet can give you some answers.

Help! It’s been two months and I still can’t touch my chinchilla.

I always tell people to think of chins like Chinavision. Lots of fun to watch, but not so much to hold. Not every chin is going to want to be held, no matter how much you try to bond with them. Some chins like people, some just tolerate us, and some want nothing to do with us. Don't be sad...

    Chinchilla liver issue

I've used kiln-dried pine shaving for 15 years with no liver problems. I've actually never heard of this before. Can you provide some research for people to read? Thanks.

RIP Feeny. Just looking for answers... support.

First, I'm very sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a friend like that. Second, many moons ago chins would regularly live that long. It's not that common anymore. Bad breeding by many has put the kebosh to that. Do not feel bad because your chin didn't live to be 20 years old...

    Chinchilla fight

Trim both of their whiskers back to less than half an inch. Put a dab of vanilla at the top of their noses and the base of their tails. Then as Amethyst said, put them in a neutral area to dust and have playtime. It's likely they will fight again though and need to be kept separate...

    Bulk chinchilla toys?

Ebay bird toys. They usually come with holes drilled in them and are just Kool-Aid (unsweetened) colored pine blocks. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=wood+toy+parts+birds&_sacat=0

    Matted fur, again

If you cut the fur, be absolutely sure you have someone there to restrain him while you do it. Many years ago a member tried to do this and ended up cutting through the chins skin into their stomach. Chins are wiggly and do not like to sit still, so you must have someone help you if you try to...

    Safe air fresheners for chins?

If this is odor control from your chin, then I would say more frequent cage cleanings rather than scented stuff. I've got a barn full of chins and all you smell is fresh pine shavings. Chins have very delicate respiratory systems and I personally would not use any scented things around them.

    Chinchilla Dry Ears?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner! I'm glad the vitamin E is working well. As long as you rub it in, there shouldn't be an issue with his coat.

    Elderly Chin Incontinence

First, congratulations on having such a healthy old-timer! I would make sure to keep her bottom area clean, as you stated you are doing. Unscented baby wipes can be used for this. Also, be sure any shelves or houses are clean so she isn't sitting in urine. Just out of curiosity - did they...

Putting a chinchilla on their back?

When I have to hand feed, I put mine on their back in a burrito. They don't like it, but it won't hurt them.
