Maguel has really purple eyes. Is this normal? I figure they will change red, unless they are born with the eye color they will have. Confused and worried! I hope it isnt bad. Please help. Thanks! kim

Don't worry! I have some chins whose eyes look purplish. They are a very dark red, and nothing to worry about. Wait until you see pictures of a beige sapphires eyes, now that is scary!

Now I am talking a creamy purple, like pastel purple (violet maybe, I think of easter when I look at them) with some blue swirled in them. Is this still normal?

This is probably a dumb question. but could I have cause blindness by taking pictures with flash? The only thing with that is, he closed his eyes everytime I took a picture.

No, the camera flash won't blind him. Don't worry. Does he act blind? Does he bump into things, seem to search for the food bowl, etc? I'm betting he is not blind, though there are blind chinchillas and they seem to get along fine.

Hmmm...maybe post a picture so we can see? Isn't Maguel just a little baby? I have never seen cataracts in a kit, but of course anything is possible.

What the heck is a beige sapphire? LOL...I'd like to see a pic of that.

Yeah, a breeder I know had a few of them...they have some crazy eyes, half black and half red in almost a tye dye type pattern...very unique and stunning! I actually think beige sapphires look nicer than most sapphires I have seen, the beige really makes the sapphire a nice color, kind of similar to a beige violet. Way too many mutes for me, but it was cool to see!

Wow, definitely a lot of mutations!

I tried to get pictures of the eyes, but they do not show up in pics, just look black. he doesnt seem to be blind, and if he is, it doesnt effect him. When should I have his eyes checked out?

I flipped out too when my beige had red eyes... thought he was possessed xD

If you're going to have his eyes checked by a vet, wait until he's older. :)

How much older?

Personally, I would wait until he's at least weaned. Since he's such a young kit, I wouldn't want to take him to a vet and introduce him to all those smells and that atmosphere- plus it might stress momma too! If he is blind, it won't affect him any differently that it is right now. He can live a long and healthy life just fine, with or without sight. If your concerned, you can call your vet, if you have found one you trust, and discuss with them possibilities as to what may be wrong with his eyes, but I wouldn't want to cause him unnecessary stress at such a young age.
