My chinny GaGa had delivered twin babies 6 days ago.
*During last two months of her pregnancy, animax calcium and all day alfafa everyday.
Vitamin C as well. Mazuri pallets and hay as usual.
*Her teeth used to be in nice orange color. About one month before giving birth, her teeth turned white with only small areas in pale orange. Hunchback issue surfaced at the same time.
*After birth: white teeth and hunchback issues remain. Today is the sixth day after birth.

GaGa's weight dropped by 128g after birth. Since then, she has been gaining +10g everyday and I believe that is the weight of milk. Babies have been gaining 2 to 4g each day from day 3 after birth. So, I believe she has been producing sufficient milk for her twins.

Apart from daily animax and alfafa, is there any other supplement that can help her coorect her hunchback and white teeth issues?

Thanks!

supplement for chinny mother

Congratulations on the birth of your kits,
Every rancher has their own ideas about supplement. We feed all of our nursing mothers a special supplement. It contains fresh wheat germ, steamed rolled oats, ground calf manna, shredded beet pulp and a product called Opti-Zyme which is a lacto bacillus product. We will give this to mom every A.M. and P.M. if she has more than one or two kits. We only give her 1/2 teaspoon per feeding. However, after her babies are a day or two old we begin giving 1/4 t. per kit along with the Mothers portion. It is amazing how soon those little ones begin to nibble at the supplement. We feed it on a coaster or dish inside the cage for the ones with kits. We will also give Mom a dried cranberry once or twice a day if she wants it. The same is true of rose hips.
Prior to delivery we give our breeding females a similar formula but without the beet pulp as it will allow the fetus to gain too much size prior to delivery and make delivery difficult.
There are many formulas for supplement out there. We have settled on this because we had availability of these products and it works well for us. If you want or need more specifics please feel free to pm me and I would be happy to share exact proportions or discuss more details with you. Good luck to you.

Thanks JoAnne for the info. I have just pm you. Please check and let me know if you receive my message.
Is it normal for the chinny mom to have white teeth and hunchback issues before and after birth? Will these issues be corrected after appropriate supplement is provided?

I would not say that it is "normal". However, it will occasionally happen. We sometime will get a female with white teeth after she has several litter. The hunchback seems to sometimes occur with any animal that is doing poorly. Those females that deliver when they are older sometime get this appearance. She should be able to bounce back with supplement feeding unless she is sickly otherwise.

GaGa is very young at one year and 9 months old only and this is her first litter. She looks bright and eats well after giving birth.

Before birth: she weighed 690g
Day 1 after birth: she weighed 562g
Now on Day 8: she weighed 603g (is it normal for the weight increase after day 1?)

Babies on Day 1: 53g each
Babies on Day 8 today: 71g each

Thanks JoAnne so much for all your advice and your kind help on supplying the supplements. You have been a great help! GaGa and her kits say thanks to you! :)

Many females will not drink while in labor and for a short time afterwards. Add to that the fluids lost during delivery and you get a somewhat dehydrated animal. Once she begins to drink and replenish the lost fluids, her weight will go up. You will see that in a day or two, it will start going down due to feeding the kits.

The weight gain on the kits is just fine. How on earth did you get two kits that weigh the same and continue to do so?

That makes sense. GaGa drank very very little water before giving birth and started drinking water quite often after. She is now steady at around 593 to 603g.

There were a few days that the kits vary by 1 to 2 grams.

Thank you for sharing your views and now I will not worry.
