My Collie-Shepard is gonna be 11 this summer. Every once in a while, but usually during the summer I think she sprains her leg by doing circles round the pool. I think she slides and pulls it and it results in slight limping for a few days. The first time it happened I took her to the vet and he prescribed Bayer aspirn. But I can not remember the dosage. I have been give her 1 pill 2 x a day but i know it was more than that. She is pretty big, probably about 60 - 75 lbs.

She is currently limping and I think with all the snow we have had she injured herself. Today is day 3. I want to try to give her some aspirin for 2 more days before I call my vet. Has anyone used this type of therapy? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Also, she is not wincing or whimpering in pain. And she is still able to jump on my bed and go up & down the stairs about 10 times a day as she follows me wherever I go.

Could you maybe call the vet and just ask for the dosage? They should have in her records exactly what he prescribed. I have never heard of giving aspirin to dogs. I know Tylenol and ibuprofen are bad, but if your vet prescribed aspirin, then I guess it's fine, but I'm still iffy on it. Maybe try half of a baby aspirin as it is a lower dose? I'm not sure. I would call if I were you just to get an exact dose so you aren't overdosing her.

I know when my doxie, who is 15, had back surgery, they gave us Rimadyl which worked really well. Maybe also try some light massages on the area? That helps and also some heat on her joints would probably feel good also.

I had a shepard/lab mix I was giving an aspirin a day to, as it seemed she also "limped after a lot of excersise. Seemed to help concederably, and she lived a long, peaceful life!
Seems it's mostly arthritis in shepards/mixes!

I no longer use that vet........however; my chin vet is awesome, I could always run it by her. Bayer is buffered aspirin and it is commonly used for pain relief in dogs. I always give it to her in a piece of cheese or ham as to not upset her stomach. I did some research and the amount I am giving her is okay. 1 of the 325 mg tab every 12 hours.
I am only going to proceed with this for a few more days and if she doesnt improve than I will take her to the vet to see if she is suffering from arthritis which is like Rick said is very common in the larger shep mixes.

I always use enteric coated Ecotrin for the arthritis dogs. The vet told me it was darn near the same as using Rimadyl, but a whole lot cheaper. It works great and it's coated to protect the stomach. Is the Bayer coated to protect the lining of the stomach?

my dog tore her acl in january, when i took her to the vet she prescribed metacam and told me to give her extra glucosamine. i had to her surgery anyways as I wasn't going to let her sit in pain like that for long. if you get something like metacam it is an anti-inflammatory and pain med in one. not just masking the pain but actually helping her injury as well.

ps. my dog besides on little yelp when she actually tore her acl, she never made another peep. she just limped around falling me around like normal. just because the dog isnt expressing pain doesnt mean they arent in lots. my bosses daughter tore her acl in soccer last summer and used to call my work crying in pain for her mom - so I can only assume how much pain my puppy was in.

peggy--buffered aspirin is coated to protect the stomach, but i also give it to her with food. i read that the ecotrin is not as effective because about half the time the coating isn't digested and the aspirin is excreted whole in the stool.

if this doesnt pass by the end of the week, i will take her to the vet to see if it is chronic but in the mean time I am going to start her on a glucosamine regimine.

Aspirin is fine for dogs according to several vets I've had the pleasure of working with. Cheap vets are usually the ones that'll tell you about it. Dogs are usually given larger doses of Aspirin than people. They metabolize medications different from humans. I'd call a vet and get the exact dosage...they should have it in a nifty dosage of common medicines for dogs and cats book.

Also...my sister has torn her ACL on the left side 4 times and her ACL on the left side once. She said actually tearing the ACL pinched but wasn't painful and it didn't hurt to walk on the leg after...the leg was just weak. Recovering from surgery and learning to walk and bend her knee with a new ligament is what caused her pain.

my bosses daughter was slightly dramatic i will agree (when I could hear here screaming through the phone across the office..), but I still think if the dogs limping something is hurting - but I would still take the dog to the vet right away in addition to pain meds I have on hand at the time if it were my dog. I suppose I am lucky because when lexi hurt her leg, I brought her in and my vet took her right back for an exam then gave me metacam - and it all cost me the price of the medicine.
my dog was amazing in her post-surgery recovery. up and walking on all fours just 3 days after (baby steps - not walking around all day of course). :)

As a vet tech, I ask that you be EXTREMELY careful about giving aspirin to your dog. My boss used to say all the time it was ok in small doses, until about a month ago. We had a dog come in that had tore her acl and the owner gave 1 aspirin to get her through the night so she wouldn't be in pain until she could get her in. That 1 aspirin caused a hole in her stomach that we had to rush her into emergency surgery to fix. Giving it with food is the safest thing you can do, but me personally will never give my dog aspirin again. There are other things that are safer that your vet can prescribe.

The only way I've seen it used (former Pharmacy tech here) is as a baby aspirin given with food for short term damage that did not cause bleeding. One of my customers' dogs thought it would be fun to climb *over* his SUV and slid off the roof.

This is definitely a question for a vet or veterinary pharmacist for the correct final answer, but it's not unheard of to use aspirin in dogs, and it's not necessarily deadly for a couple of doses. I'd call a pharmacy and ask them to double check the dosage for a dog that size (if you can convert her wait to Kg, it'll go faster for them) until you can get in touch with a vet you trust. The pharmacy is also a good place to ask about a trustworthy vet, btw. Good vets are like good doctors; they know their stuff well enough that they cause fewer call backs and rewrites. Don't try a big chain with a $4.00 program first, though; if there's a mom and pop type drug store, try them instead. They might have more time to get done what you need. Otherwise, wait to call the big ones until 6PM when the pre dinner "RAWR GIVE ME MY STUFF NOW!!!!!!!!!!" rush is over. :) And don't feel like a dork calling a pharmacy about a pet; at the one I worked for at least, as well as the one my future mother in law runs, the pet people are the favorite customers b/c we're being responsible for our critters when they get hurt or sick and need insulin, seizure meds, etc. It's a sign of a kind heart and compassion, which can be pretty refreshing in the middle of a day full of demands.
