    Wall trim chewing: any solutions?

I did a search here and was surprised to find little on it, as it seems to be a rather universal tendency amongst chinchillas to chew on wall trim. He didn't do it in my old apartment hardly at all but the new one he seems to think is a delicacy and went on a wall trim chewing frenzy when we...

I wish I were this handsome.

It's tough to get good pictures of Gulliver, as he's often quite hyper, but he was kind enough to strike a pose for me for a couple of minutes. I know who my future wingman will be.

What kind of rocks are safe to eat?

We were moving some stuff around one day and among is was one of those rocks with sparkly stuff in the middle of it, like this quartz. Gulliver was quite fascinated with chewing on the outside of it. Knowing that he'll chew on any such thing I put in his cage: What kind of rocks are safe...

What live plants are safe for chins to eat (if any)?

I did a search on this question and didn't find much... This post was interesting: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showpost.php?p=189207&postcount=8 Gulliver's been nosing at couple of plants around the house and it got me thinking that a live plant would probably be a very fun treat. Of...

    Recycling treats

Gulliver, like a lot of chinchillas, mostly likes to eat the bark off of apple branches. I also gave him some loofahs that he chewed up quite a bit but then lost interest in. One day I saw he noshing on an apple branch that had had the bark chewed off of it long ago, but that's rare. I've been...

What is Tradition food based on and what kind of hay would best compliment it?

I did some searching but couldn't find the answer, sorry. I've heard that if you use pellets based on either Timothy or alfalfa you should give them the opposite hay. Ironically, I found a nutritional breakdown of Tradition but not a simple ingredients list. Thanks!

Spoiling and the importance of routine

I'm a freelancer and I have an erratic schedule. I often work from home so that facilitates plenty of chinchilla time and I live with my girlfriend so she can let him out if I'm gone at night. However, my life is such that Gulliver doesn't always get let out one a strict schedule–sometimes I'm...

Chinchilla or lemming? (How far have you seen a chinchilla safely fall?)

Gulliver is usually very agile and make very calculated and feasible jumps, but a couple of times I've seen him take a dive beyond reason. In the main incident in question, he took a sudden jump off of the back of a chair up onto the wall and then went 4-5 feet down. Perhaps he thought he saw...

    Hay waste

Gulliver almost always picks through a lot of his hay. Sometimes more than others. My girlfriend drew an analogy of a four-year-old picking through a bowl of Cheerios to find the 3 "special ones." I've tried to identify his criteria but it's not clear. He loves the fuzzy parts of the Timothy...

    Odd timing of bark

Let me preface this by saying that I've only had Gulliver for a couple of weeks. My apologies if this should be in the other forum. In the 2-3 weeks I've had him, I only heard him give one single bark at night a few days after I brought him home, and I wasn't near him; I understand this common...

Artificial light vs. time of day

Since chins are mostly nocturnal or crepuscular, even though they may be awake at night are they known to have a preference for darkness? I've been try to see if Gulliver has a preference for lighting but I can't tell from his behaviour over the two weeks I've had him so far. Also I couldn't...

Tolerance vs. enjoyment: reading a new chinchilla

This is my first post, so hello–I've done some browsing here and this looks like an excellent forum. About two weeks ago, I adopted a 3-year-old chinchilla named Gulliver from an awesome girl who has a sort of "chinchilla orphanage" in the suburbs around here. (If you see this, Robyn–hi! You're...
