    Oxbow food changing

Small world, my earlier post that mentions it being in stock at a California PetSmart was that specific one, lol.

    Oxbow food changing

Here's a pic I took this week at my local PetSmart in California. Hopefully this is a sign that do plan to continue to carry it. Updated packaging and price tag sticking out saying new. I've been buying this off Amazon for a while, 5lbs for $10, give or take. Were the ones at PetSmart before...

Oxbow no longer available at Petsmart?

I was noticing the same pattern as everyone else when prepping to order off Amazon and checking other retail sites. Luckily, PetSmart has the new version in stock at a retail store. Total of 5 bags with a shelf price tag with a big NEW label on it, $18 for 3lbs. I usually order 5lb bags off...

    Goodbye Missy (Unexpected Death)

Thank you It's tough, as I keep thinking of all the extra time I could of spent with her before this, and then all the things she can't do from here on after such a short life. It's been a busy year with freelance and work, so I was looking forward to a time when things were more quiet and I...

    Goodbye Missy (Unexpected Death)

Last night Missy, one of my two chinchillas, unexpectedly passed away. The two years I've had her went by way too fast and I will miss her. She was between the ages 3-4, very young. This was my first time having pets, as I had none as a kid, so the loss is hitting more than I thought it would...

    Bass Equipment Company

Good news! They sent me replacement pans after choosing that option over a discount. This time when they arrived, it was clear they made a much better attempt to protect the pans. The first set each arrived in a thin box with the Bass Equip logo on it that were taped together to make a single...

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

Yes, very scary. I mean, I've seen how chinchillas survive with uninformed owners and poor conditions at pet stores, eating plastic all the time. I'm usually never worried too much with the pet stores, since after all, they are still alive after being there so long. Yet, one tiny piece of...

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling better already. It's crazy how the first two weeks were bliss, then one thing goes wrong and I realize how many other things can too and be serious :P Here's what I take from this. If there's anything you are doing around your chins that in the back of your mind you...

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

I've kept an eye on them. They are still drinking water, eating and dropping poo. It's tough to gauge their behavior as it's constantly changing during the volatile bonding stage. It can be confusing if it was something I did or if they are not doing well. For example. When I got home for...

    Ferret Nation 142 wood shelves

I've had my 1year old chins for about 2 weeks now in a FN182 cage, full of wooden ledges and perches. They are good jumpers and surprisingly fast and accurate, expect when they panic. From my short experience, your chin will be skittish until he's use to his new home, so maybe make the early...

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

If anything, they seem to be a little bit more at home lately. Making more use of the cage, being just over two weeks. It's also hard to tell if poo is normal since they are about half and half oxbow and the breeders original food pellets. Overall though, acting normal, loving their chew stuff...

    Help with heat?

As a last resort, do you have a vet with AC that can board them during the heat wave? Might not be feasible if the heat is expected to last for weeks. Maybe a friend or family member has a basement that's naturally cooler despite not having AC?

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

Thanks for the reply, it's encouraging. The rest of the day things went fine. They got plenty of sleep after keeping them up this morning. Right now, they are still acting normal 24hrs after discovering the bag. The beige chin is pretty shy in the cage, being only two weeks, but now a little...

    Plastic bag chewed, likely eaten

So, I've had my first incident involving plastic :( It's been two weeks since getting my two 1 year old female chinchillas, and everything has been great. I researched online, books, and here to give them the best setup and safe food/treats. Then I make a stupid mistake of placing the snack...

    2 New Girls (Pics)

New photos of white mosaic. This was her 3rd time outside of the cage running around, mostly exploring slowly. Wish I had more stuff for her to play with. The beige chin has been the most shy and attempts to join the play time, but nervously backs out. Photos:

    Bass Equipment Company

Pikaia, or anyone with perfect pans, are the bottoms flat in the cage for the most part? No areas popping in and out with noise? Say if a chin jumps down on it, runs across, or wiping it with pressure to clean? I have fleece under them to dampen the metal on metal noise.

    Bass Equipment Company

I'm going through the same situation with damaged Bass pans. The damage looks minor, but enough to make the pans noisy due to the popping from the bottoms that are now warped or bent. If I clean the pans or chinchillas moving across them, they like to pop back and forth. The bottom pan is...

    2 New Girls (Pics)

Yeah, it seems to be a metal tag. I never asked the breeder about it. Seeing it still there after picking her up, I just figured it's something that's not removed once attached. Don't know what it was for specifically. Shows? I want to take a lot more photos, but my camera is a DSLR that...

Chins First Couple Weeks Advice? Plus Back Seat Drivers?

Your right, his Tegu is an Argentina B&W Tegu. We know of that Columbian's reputation. So far things have gone smoothly for the Tegu that he got as a baby from a reptile expo. Almost 2 years now, but still plenty to grow. He's never bitten anyone so far. Though, I'm always getting blamed will...

Chins First Couple Weeks Advice? Plus Back Seat Drivers?

Thanks Tunes, He means well and I'm sure he's not going solely off his reptile knowledge. I suppose maybe I need to show more confidence and stand my ground so he doesn't have to worry that I'm not taking this serious. I've also mentioned to him that these guys are coming from a breeder, where...
