Has anybody purchased the 14" Silver Surfer Wheel from Chinchillas.com?

I have both the chinspin and Ed wheel and would like to replace the Ed wheel. After several years of use, the wood backing has become distorted, worn out and soaked with urine. I am trying to decide between getting either a second chinspin or the silver surfer. I am concerned that the silver surfer has a running path of only 4 inches. The chinspin is at least 6 inches and the Ed is at least 5. Is a four inch running path too narrow? The surfer wheel is completely metal so I would not need to worry about the wood backing deteriorating from moisture, but the narrow path gives me doubts.

Thanks.

Hi brekai.

I am considering a second chinspin but I'm concerned that it will eventually succumb to moisture damage as did the Ed wheel. Both the chinspin and Ed have wood backings. If only they would make a solid metal chinspin.

I've had no problems with moisture damage so far but I see your point. I wish they still sold the Braun wheel because I love it the best.

I am also curious of anyone's opinion of the silver surfer. While I won't be purchasing one in the near future, the purple one is calling my name. :p

I have five silver surfer wheels. Four of them are 16" silver wheels and one is a 14" pink wheel. These are some of my favorite wheels of all time along with the Leo Braun. The narrower running surface doesn't seem to be an issue for even the pudgiest chin here. They are a nice quiet wheel and the chins don't seem to get propelled out of them like they do with the chin spin. I've also got a few chin spins, a couple of Ed wheels and several Leo Brauns.

Thanks guys.

Menagerie: Does the 16" silver surfer have a wider running path? The chin who is getting a new wheel is small to average size at ~540 grams. If I buy the surfer, I hope he will adjust to the narrower path. If you don't mind me asking, how much did shipping cost?

Is it possible to attach a surfer wheel to a solid back cage? I noticed that there are three hooks on the back of the wheel. I could possibly install complementary "loops" to support the hooks.

I'll have to measure the running path on the two different sizes. The top attaches by 2 hooks and the bottom has a thumb screw that goes in a hole. I can't remember what shipping was. I've had them for a few years now.

Glad to know someone have tried the surfer wheel. I wonder considering to get another wheel since chin spin is out for me as Quality Cage Co. required bank transfer from international customers.

I have a leo braun wheel and flying saucer.
R the silver surfer wheel powder coated as well like the colored pink and purple ones? are 14" good enough for them? i have some fatties as I always feel 16" is abit too huge and they occupy alot of cage space.

Menagerie: Did you install any of your silver surfers against a solid wall or are they all in wire cages. After looking at the back of the surfer wheel, I think it might be impractical to install it against a solid wall if I use eyebolts (i.e. a screw with a loop at the end) for the two hooks. The bottom thumbscrew would no longer be on a vertical plane with the upper hooks and the wheel would tilt downwards.

I installed it on a wire cage. I also measured both the 14" and 16" wheel, the running track is 4" on both of them.

What type of solid cage are you trying to fit this in?

Menagerie: I have a melamine cage.

In an e-mail correspondence with chinchillas.com, a rep explained to me how to attach the wheel to a solid (i.e. melamine) wall. I'm relieved that it will work out as the 16" chinspin is just slightly too wide to fit in this particular cage. Besides, the silver surfer is sooo aesthetically pleasing --I'm really excited about getting it . My poor chin was promised a new wheel two years ago and I'm just getting around to replacing it now.

Interesting, how can it be mounted on a solid surface?

They recommended that I bend the hooks to a 90 degree angle and hang them
on a type of hardware (the name of which I can't remember) that needs to be attached to the wall. For the thumbscrew, I will need to drill a hole into the wall . Additionally, I anticipate needing to buy a longer thumbscrew.

Menagerie, do you have any photos of your chins "silver surfing?" And thank you for all of your help.

That's an interesting way to hang it. I can see it working well.

I don't. I'll see if I can get some this week. Tucker runs on his wheel everyday before I get him out to feed him.

Thank you! Don't go to too much trouble. I'm just curious to see to see a chin on a silver surfer. It is such a beautiful wheel.

My little guy is a "wheel wetter" and refuses to stop running when nature calls. I'm sure that the surfers and Braun's are easier to maintain being solid metal. Too much pee eventually damages the porous wood backing and it is impossible to clean.

I have a 16" silver surfer I bought 4 years ago.My chin who weighs around 800 grams runs on it every night and he loves it.I also have 3 chin spins.
The surfer is 4" wide and the chin spin is 7" wide.

They are both great!

Thanks Harley. How loud is it compared to the chinspin?

I just bought the 14" silver surfer and it should arrive by the end of the week. chinchillas.com told me that they are no longer selling the 16" (which is too wide for the cage, anyway).

There about the same amount of noise. It's more the cage rattling that makes the noise than the wheels. My boys run hard!
