Well I took my Richie to an exotic specialist yesterday an hour away. She did an exam, took x-rays, took blood, extracted a molar, filed some teeth & gave meds......$707 dollars and 6 hours later, he was home in his cage actually eating!
My first vet was on the right track, he has a mouth infection, unfortunatly it is chronic & he definitely has malo. He also had a little GI stasis.
She basically told me.........do I want THIS chinchilla or A chinchilla. Because with meds and lots of care, Richie can live comfortably for some time, of course not the expected 10 - 15 years I had hoped but a couple/few years.
He would require medication & frequent vet visits, so if i have the money, time and love that we can start there. You would never know he was sick by looking at him this morning. Bouncing, eating, drinking, etc.......

She gave him Metacam for the pain, Batril for the infection & Cisapro to get the gut moving.

She is a fellow scrapbooker & she brought my camera into the room so i have attached some pix of what they did to him and also of his x-rays.

Of course this is not the news i wanted to hear, so I am going to let this course of meds go thru, see how he does over the next few months and decide from there. I dont want him in pain and when it comes time for that I will put him down. I am also trying to ease both my son and myself into losing him..........which is not an easy task.

If you are in the NJ area and need an exotic specialist, they are amazing at the Oakhurst animal hospital. The facilities are amazing and the doctors are top rate............very pricey though!!!

So..........keep my richie in your thoughts (and me too cause having to give 3 types of meds twice a day is very taxing!! )

I hope yall are both gonna be ok. i do think those are wonderful pics for the scrapbook

My best wishes to both of you. This is a horrible thing to go through. Hope he can have a comforable, extended life. :)) If not, you'll know you've already had a blessed time with him. :hug4:

Richie is such a cutie! I am so sorry that he has to go through all this. Do let him go through this course of medication. If he goes through this treatment cycle with no complications, wait it out and see how often he needs to see the doctor. Hopefully he won't need to visit her that often, and you can still keep him for many years.

Hang in there. :bird5: Get well soon, Richie!

Aww - the pictures of him in the tank just tugs at your heart. Unfortunately, I've seen that for bad reasons more than I want to, not just for check ups or treatment.

He's a beautiful little boy. I hope this all goes well for you and that he is able to be with you for many more years.

I am so sorry you didn't get better news from the vet but it seems as if he is doing ok right now. Hopefully the meds work and aren't too pricey and you can get at least a few more years with him. No matter when, it is always difficult to say goodbye, but knowing you have given him the best life possible makes the choice a little easier. But Richie is in my thoughts and I sure hope he proves himself to be a fighter so he can be spoiled by you for many years to come!

I know this was the news that you were dreading. He's and adorable little guy. I know you also want the best for him and hope that for the both of you, he can live a somewhat normal life with you for as long as he can. Hang on Ritchie!

I am so sorry it happens to him ! I hope the meds will make him feel better ! and hopefully you'll be able to keep him for a long time !

Good luck to you and Ritchie. We wish you the best. I have to say, those x-rays are amazing.

My best wishes to Richie! I hope he will be with you for a long time!
:prayer:

WOW!!! Cool photos -- thanks for sharing!!!

I hope that Richie does well and is able to enjoy a long life with you. It appears that he is in the right hands!!!

That's awesome that they took pictures for you! and those x-rays are great!

Here's hoping that the meds work for him and help him have a good life. Who knows, maybe they will help enough that he won't have to suffer and he will get better!
