No. Rabbits can do it too, and so can some other species which have well-defined uterine horns.

I also think leaving opposite sex baby chinchillas after weaning and more than 8 weeks old with their mothers is a bad idea.

I thought they matured after that. A big apology to everyone for my previous comment, really pretty ignorant of me.
Personally, Ivan was separated from Sonya at ~7 weeks, anyway, because she started kacking at him when he was trying to nurse, and I didn't want her to get too upset at him and hurt him.
That's really good to know about baby male chins, though.
What is the earliest a female chin can mature? Is it also at 8 weeks? Because I know I've read about people who leave whole families together (mostly on the craigslist debate topic)...and it would be a shame if a female chin who was only 8 weeks old was 1. impregnated by dad (ouch!) or brother and then 2. had to deliver babies before she is even fully grown.

If you have a male and female, unneutered, in the same place at the same time, you are risking pregnancy. If the male gets into the female's cage, whether accidental or not, that could result in pregnancy. The easiest way to prevent pregnancy is to have only same-sex chinchillas. Like with humans, there are many things you can do to lower the chance of having an "accidental" pregnancy, such as housing in separate areas, or keeping them in different cages, but there are always those freak accidents! I'm aware this is a very doom and gloom sort of view, but this is the exact reason why my husband and I either have only females, like our seven chins, spay/neuter, like our cats and dogs, or have only one of a species, like our reptiles. After caring for two litters of kittens and a litter of puppies that only came into this world as a result of someone else's stupidity, I don't particularly want to deal with anymore cute fuzzies right now. The easiest way to avoid this is to keep same sex animals.
If you have done your research on the animals, you should be able to tell the difference. If you cannot, take the animal to someone who can, like an exotics specialist or breeder. While no one is perfect, most successful breeders or experienced exotic vets should be able to tell you the sex of an animal with near-perfect accuracy.

The earliest I have heard of a female becoming pregnant is four months of age. It has happened that people have left the mother and daughter with the male and he bred the daughter at four months of age. Every case I've heard of this the daughter either died giving birth or had a C-section to take out a kit that was dead or died soon after. It's extremely dangerous for a chinchilla to get pregnant that young as you can imagine.
There was a mod on CnQ who had a chin conceive at 2 months of age, she gave birth at 5 months. That is a freak thing, you don't hear of that happening every day, but it "can" happen.

That's scary. That's like a child giving birth at 11 or 12...girls can go into puberty at that age or younger, but it's a freak thing, etc etc. Plus who is trying to impregnate an 11 yr old human? :impatient: Thank goodness I've never heard of any cases of this happening in people.

Thanks for posting that, intriguing read.
Lots of cases on my mom's side in the 17/1800's where they were married and started having children between 8-13 years of age. Even in the early 1900's this was common in the US, and still very much is in the middle east.
As far as chins, I've heard as young as four months, and males hitting puberty at 10 weeks. Thankfully not something I've experienced yet.

I had some little cousins put one of my rescue boys in with 3 rescue girls, multiple times (while I wasn't home). I wouldn't call them accidents, more like "kajdhfkasjdhfkasjhdfkjayhdf!!!!!!!!!!" And it resulted in babies *grumble*. I would say it was more of a learning experience. I learned to put locks on my cages (although I know its not practical for those that have lots of chins). Although for almost a week I thought they got knocked up cuz the cages were too close together [it was the only reasoning i had at the time] - then the brats confessed.
I felt very bad when my friend that gave me one of the girls found out she had babies. She trusted me to not to breed her, and although *I* didn't breed her, it might as well lay at my feet for it because it happend in my home.

Chins can actually get bred again while they are pregnant and carry two pregnancies at once. Some say they can also get a bred back before the even litter.

Not true, there was a lady who was pregnant twice; meaning as in she was about 3 weeks pregnant with one fetus while there was another in her womb who was 2 weeks younger. It is possible for humans to get pregnant again, while still pregnant with the first pregnancy. Apparently there have only been 10 reported cases, but none the less it can happen to humans as well. Not sure if you meant that it is impossible for humans to have a double pregnancy but I've read many people saying that while it's possible for chinchillas, it isn't for humans. Just thought I'd point it out that it is possible for humans.

I posted on your other thread. The difference is this is common in chinchillas due to difference is uterus compared to ours. In people it is a freak occurance, So it is more important to know this with chinchillas as it is common. As interesting as it is that is happens in people (which many of us likely knew as when it happens it makes the news) the odds of it happening in a person is probably like 1 in tens of thousands and in chinchillas it is like 1 out of 20. So people wanting to breed their chinchillas need to know about this as it can be rough on mom where people wanting to breed themselves really don't have to worry.....

When we got our second chin we considered getting a sweet retired girl but settled on another boy. One of the biggest reasons is that we wanted the choice of introducing the chins to each other. We felt that the only way of preventing any pregnancies was not to have a girl and Edgar in the same house. I will honestly admit that if we had gotten a girl we probably would have had a pregnancy because I would have introduced them. Cute babies are much more tempting if you have both sexes and is not the reason to breed.
Of course we learned our lesson about unplanned pregnancies when our "female" king pigeon impregnated our two feral pigeon girls. Luckily only one egg hatched and we have to replace eggs regularly so as not to repeat this mistake but you can't do that with chinchillas.
