does it have to be clear or can it be colored?

Doesn't really matter, but I use clear for the following reasons:
1. Clear allows more light in.
2. Easier to see where dirty stains are.
3. Easier to see if hedgie has off-colored poop, etc. or blood.
(My hedgies have a tendency of getting poop on the walls of the bin... so having clear helps to check poop out.)
If you use light-colored liners though, colored bins are fine... but make sure that your hedgie can get enough light from either a lamp or natural sun.

It needs to be clear otherwise they don't get enough light.

It has to be clear. But I think the clear plastic can be colored. Like tinted.
