Adopted a new dog

Hi all!

My husband and I adopted a golden retriever/labrador mix, who is 6 years old. The dog freaks out (barks, cries) when he hears the chinchilla metal wheel. He also whines/stares in the general direction of the chinchilla cage (we separated the 2 into different rooms). Anyone with dogs experience/rectify this type of situation before?

We've had the dog for a little over a week. When we bring the dog upstairs to our bedroom for the night, he can still hear the chinchilla on his wheel through the door and whines at night.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

the dog might need time to adjust just like a chin would. What kind of wheel do you have?

Just a metal round wheel (Chin Spin from quality cages)

Dog just tried to circle/bump into cage tonight. We're not sure if it was out of curiosity about the chinchilla, prey drive (he lunges towards squirrels on walks), or trying to figure out the source of the wheel sound. We got the dog under control, and the chinchilla is fine physically/psychologically.

Any additional help/advice is greatly appreciated.
