First off, Reggie, my chin is ok, he is eating, pooping, and just as happy and loving as ever, so its not really a life or death emergency at the moment.
I kinda have to give a bit of a back story on him. Reggie was at our local humane society and we saw him with his fur all clumped up and there was a wet matted down spot around his eye. He was in an aquarium in the wrong kind of bedding... I know that the humane society was kind enough to try to find him a home, but they lacked the knowledge to care for him correctly, it had been almost 2 month since he had a dust bath and he was on a guinea pig diet We took him home without question... I took him home, let him take a long dust bath and right there we because best friends. I cleaned up his eye and found he had a cut just above the eye that was healing. It wasn't infected but look like his eye was watering a lot from it. Other then the eye he was all around healthy. We still took him to the vet the next day, she gave him a clean bill of health except if the cut didn't keep healing to call her and she would get him some meds. The cut and watery eyes were gone in a few days after that... This was back in early November. He will get a crusty in his eyes once and a while, but i never thought any thing of it as they will be dry and only show up like once every week and a half or so and are really small... Today i noticed a bit of mucus like gunk in the corner of the same eye, i cleaned it up, it didn't seem to bother him and figured i would just watch it... it came back in a few hours... Other then being upset because he can't have a dust bath or play with his friends (he is quarantined by himself till we get to the vet) he seems ok. Its just one eye, and its just on the bottom rim of the eye. This guy i guess is going to be my problem chin... the regular vets was closed by the time it came back, so i will be making and appointment for Monday. So i don't sound like a fool at the vets, any ideas what this could be and any thing i could be doing to care for it till Monday? I don't think it is his teeth and there are not cuts or marks. The eye looks ok, no scratches that i can see. Its a white-ish color watery gunk, but its not running or anything, just lining the bottom rim of the eye. I tried to get pictures, but it really doesn't show up in them. Thanks for reading my post, and thanks in advance for any input... Its been 3 years since i got my first chin, since then i have moved to 8... this is my first health issue that cannot be handled in house to thanks for your support! |

It could be a scratch on his eye that you won't see without a stain so I would recommend asking for that. It could be conjunctivitis. It could be just a buildup of dust that is getting blinked from his eyes but if it keeps coming back right after you have cleaned it, that is not likely the case here. I do have a girl who after her dust baths gets a little stuff in the corner of her eye. Hopefully it will be easily remedied. Let us know how it goes!

Of course everything cleared up today now that we had a vet appointment. The vet couldn't find any issues with his eye, and he is doing fine. So now i get to blame the dust bath. I use sunseed sunthing special brand, all the rest do fine with it. Its that really fine grit stuff. Other then ordering online we have the Kaytee brand in our stores and that really large grit stuff i think superpets makes (The same stuff that comes with the plastic dust bath houses). What do you guys use?

I would order dust online, the dust can make a huge difference!
Check the sales section here for some Blue Cloud, you'll notice a HUGE difference, and less eye goobers! Plus even with shipping if you get like 10#'s it's usually cheaper than store kinds, and much better quality. Glad there was nothing wrong!

I use Blue Cloud that I have to order on-line (or get at a show if someone that sells it is going). I have one girl who gets a little goop in her eye after her bath but it goes away and she is fine.
